DJ
Did I mention I sometimes DJ? You can hire me if you like. Why not whet your appetite by listening to a few of these mixtapes I’ve prepared for you? They’re all recorded live in one take using vinyl and feature a broad selection of music that would light up any party, be it underground clubnight, a warm-up for your experimetal* beat combo or a joyous funeral for an unpopular distant relative.
If I could add a small disclaimer, it’s that I’m sometimes a little cautious about accepting offers, partly because every time I’ve played out in recent years, a slightly different version of the following scene has always played out:
Woman: (Quite drunk, having first invited herself into the DJ booth and then started scratching the records while making a ‘wiki-wiki’ noise for added hilarity) Are you going to play any Lady Gaga?
Self: Sorry, no.
Woman: (completely unable to believe this) Why not?
Self: I don’t have any.
Woman: (as though the sky has just fallen in) What do you mean, you don’t have any?!
Self: I don’t have any.
Woman: Well, you could put my iPod on?
Self: No. Sorry. But maybe you’ll hear something new tonight that you really like?
Woman: No, I won’t. Come on, just play one Lady Gaga song! I’m the only one dancing! And it’s my friend’s birthday! And I’m in the music business! etc. etc.
Yes, sadly the role of the DJ has become slightly cheapened in the modern world when everyone thinks they can do a better job than you just because they have a slightly tinny copy of every song ever written in their trouser pocket. Still, I’m always open to interesting offers. If you have one of those simply email robinthefog@gmail.com and I’ll get back to you.
Anyway, lets plunge into those mixtapes, starting with a two-part mix of my DJ set for ‘The Art Party’ at a gallery known as Mol’s Place in London.
Actually played for four hours in the end, but these two are probably enough to be getting on with.
Now let’s head straight for the lowest common denominator, a mixtape which has become far-and-away the most popular thing I have ever been associated with; a fact I put down to the eternal smuttiness of the Great British Public:
And then follow that with another two-part mixtape, this time my DJ sountrack to ‘Night Of The Living Dead: Reanimated’, a mix that has far less smut (and consequently received far fewer listens), but far, far greater musical content:
Or perhaps you’re ready for something in a sultry tempo?
Or something a little less hectic and a bit more artistic?
* Another little disclaimer. The writer Jonathan Greer (he of The Huffington Post and The 405, no less!) pointed out that I had spelt the word ‘experimental’ wrongly at the beginning of this page; missing out the letter ‘n’. My first thought was to correct the typo at once. But my second thought was ‘Wow, I wonder what EXPERIMETAL would sound like? Like a new kind of AMAZING, I’ll bet! It’s true that a quick Google-search has confirmed that it doesn’t sound like a new kind of anything as of yet, but nonetheless, I’m keeping it, in the hope that one day the world’s first ever ‘experimetalist’ band might form and book me as their tour DJ. The address is at the top of the page. I’m waiting…
